POWDER COATING

How Powder Coating Works

The most common method of applying powder coatings are based on polymer resin systems (typically Epoxy, Polyester, Urethane or a Hybrid which is some combination of resins). These resin systems are combined with curatives, pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other additives which are mixed and ground into a uniform powder like baking flour.  The dry powder is then electrostatically sprayed.  This application method uses a fluidizing hopper and spray gun, which applies a positive charge to the powder particles which are then attracted to the grounded part.  After the parts have been coated, the parts enter the curing oven where, the powder melts, flows out and chemically reacts to produce long molecular chains, resulting in high cross-link density. These molecular chains are very resistant to breakdown.

Durability of Powder Coating

Powder coating is a high-quality finish found on thousands of products from the toughest machinery to the household items you depend on daily.  It is much tougher and provides a more durable finish than liquid paints can offer.  Powder coated products are more resistant to impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and other extreme weather conditions. In turn, this reduces the risk of scratches, chipping, abrasions, corrosion, fading, and other wear issues.

It's tough – It looks great – and it lasts a very long time.  It is also an attractive choice due to its environmental advantages.

Pretreatment

Any coating is only as good as the substrate on which it is applied.  Proper part preparation or pretreatment is critical to the durability and performance of a finish.  Our pretreatment process utilizes high temp alkaline cleaners to remove oils then rinsed followed by a conversion coating for ferrous or nonferrous materials then rinsed then a non-chrome sealer that provides unsurpassed adhesion.
